Alexei Vasiliev

A serious chaser of beautiful Yakut landscape shots. Passionate about the culture of his home region, Alexei travels around the country as a photographer for almost 10 years now. Alexei documents life around him for what it is. Ordinary, unremarkable people behind their usual routine are quite frequent in his work. The photographer compares the beauty of Yakutia with the silence: «Yakutia does not scream, it is little spoken, deserted. The gaze of a regular Yakutia inhabitant is turned not just some place distant, but inwards».

Alexei also tells the world about the Yakut cinematic phenomenon. Thus, in 2021, in cooperation with the «Sakhawood» project Alexei won the World Press Photo Contest in the «Modern problems» section — the most prestigious award in the field of photojournalism and documentary photography. Alexei introduces Yakutia to the world through the world’s leading issues, such as Time, National Geographic, Guardian, Gup, Wired, China Newsweek among others. «I am sure that the historical and modern culture of Yakutia is the main wealth of our region. Not gold or diamonds, but an inexhaustible creativity. «Alexei Vasiliev says that he is a writer, and he is writng a book about Yakutia, but just prefers to use photographs instead of words.
