Andrei Borisov

Minister of Culture and Spiritual Development of Yakutia (1990 through 2014). Founder of the Olonkho Theatre. Laureate of the Kulakovsky State Prize, the State Prizes of both the USSR and Russia. Chevalier of the Order «For Merits to the Fatherland of the IV class». Honorary citizen of the Republic of Yakutia. Andrei began his creative activity immediately after graduating from Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School. In 1976, he organized a theatre studio at Yakutsk State University on a voluntary basis.

From 1977 to 1981, he was a student of the Directing faculty at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. Took part in performances at Mayakovski Theatre. Andrei’s thesis, «Desired, blue coast mine», a play based on a novel by Chingiz Aitmatov «Spotted Dog Running Along the Seashore», won several theatrical festivals, and in 1986 he was awarded the USSR State Prize. He staged performances on the stage of the Gorky Moscow Art Theatre, the State Opera and Ballet Theater of Yakutia, Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre, the Russian Theatre. The combination of ethnic and European theatrical techniques and traditions is what makes his works so authentic. Always rich with music and minimalistic in set design, his performances are emotionally heated, designed to attract spectators into the midst of the story. His performances have been a part of the repertoire for many years now.

The brightest period in the 70-year history of the Yakut Drama Theatre, the true flourishing of Yakut stage art, is associated with the name of Andrei Borisov. The performances he staged won numerous prestigious awards, including the Golden Mask Award. Thanks to Andrei Borisov, numerous major cultural projects in Yakutia are carried out under the auspices of UNESCO. Over the years of his work on the stage of the Sakha Theatre, Andrei Borisov staged more than fifty performances, each being a significant event in the cultural life of Yakutia.
